These rare birds of Dutch origins emerged in Holland early in the 20th century. The Welsummer chicken was admitted into the American Standard of Perfection in 1991.
These chickens have a beautiful loose or soft, feathered plumage that is black and brownish red, somewhat similar to the Rhode Island Red. Welsummer chickens are mostly sought after for their large, deep dark reddish-brown eggs. Some of the eggs will also have brown spots on them too. The baby chicks can be color sexed which makes this breed an exciting chicken for the kids to hatch. The Kellogg’s Cornflakes chicken is a Welsummer.
